The origins of Thistle date back to 1815 when a group of avid golfers in Leith, Scotland banded together to organize Thistle Golf Club. Those early Thistle members shared the Leith links course with other local golf societies, and chose to conduct their activities in a very careful and respectful manner.

With great care and consideration, the group developed a well planned membership and rules for conduct, significantly influencing the rules by which the game is played today. Several years ago, many of the historic documents and artifacts from the ancient Thistle Golf Club were obtained at auction to be placed on display in Thistle’s new clubhouse as part of one of the world’s premier collections of historic golf memorabilia.

Native to Europe and eastern Asia, the thistle plant was introduced in the U.S. late in the 1800's. Thistle is a thorny plant with a beautiful purple flower. Of lore and legend, the thorny Thistle is said to have saved Scotland from invading Norsemen when nighttime guards were alerted by cries of pain as the attacking army walked through the thistle with their bare feet. Today, the Scotch thistle is the badge of the Scottish Order of the Thistle and the national emblem of Scotland. Next Page
